For a few years now, I’ve been juicing turmeric rhizomes, more commonly referred to as ‘roots’, in order to alleviate the arthritis affecting my hands … because I did not want to take a pharmaceutical drug. Of course, I am not a medical doctor and I’m not pushing a cure, but I am amazed by the positive effects that drinking fresh turmeric juice has had, on drastically reducing my own symptoms.
Turmeric is called the ‘spice of life’ for very good reason, as it has a long list of health benefits. It’s anti-inflammatory, a powerful anti-oxidant and has anti-microbial properties. Turmeric also protects the health of your skin, boosts your immunity and benefits brain, heart and oral health. Turmeric possesses detoxifying properties and can protect the body against the toxicity caused by exposure to metals and carcinogens.
About twice a week, I make a batch of this juice and divide it into small mason jars which I drink, (or shoot) first thing in the morning, on an empty stomach.
The recipe is pretty basic.
Using a juicer, I juice:
a large piece of turmeric root, peeled or a couple of smaller pieces,
and a 1 inch piece of ginger, peeled.
Once, this is all juiced, I pour it into a blender and add:
a teaspoon of Manuka honey
and a 1/2 teaspoon of Camu Camu powder.
I blast it a few times to incorporate the honey and the powder, and then split the juice between two small mason jars.
Usually, I’ll make enough of this juice to last for 4 days or fill 4 small mason jars (halfway).
The basic recipe makes enough to half fill, two, small mason jars (pictured above).
If you’re wondering why I add Manuka honey and Camu Camu powder to this shot, here’s a brief nutritional profile on each of these additives.
The Camu Camu berry is one more amazing, superfood coming out of the Amazonian rainforest. This little berry is such a nutritional powerhouse that’s it referred to as ‘nature’s vitamin pill’.
Most notably, Camu Camu contains a high concentration of Vitamin C. While it also contains protein, potassium and carotenoids, the Camu Camu berry is a source of antioxidants which can assist the body in limiting free radical damage on skin cells, as well as positively affect the accumulation of plaque found in the neurological channels along which brain signals travel. Camu Camu also contains ellagic acid which can reduce the risk of diabetes.
The other noteworthy addition to this wellness shot is the highly acclaimed Manuka honey. Not only does this New Zealand-sourced honey naturally sweeten the juice shot, but it also packs a nutritional punch. Manuka honey is known to assist digestive health, oral health, it helps out allergy sufferers, it’s great for your skin, boosts your immunity and best of all, it helps improve sleep patterns.
This shot comes together easily! Make it ahead of time, store it in the fridge and start your day off by increasing your wellness.
