You Are My Sunshine

My best days skiing have always been sunny ones.  Riding the chairlift up the mountain on a sunny, windless afternoon offers   up an inspiring vista of tall pines and snowy peaks.  It’s at those  moments when I’m glad that I left my warm bed at the crack of dawn, layered myself down in all kinds of thermals and stepped into my skis.  It’s the sunshine that makes all the difference.

Sunshine cheers us despite the month.  It warms us as we ski down a mountain.  We hope for it to appear when we’ve scheduled an outing to the beach, to the lake or to the trails for a hike.  As we lift our (sun-screened) faces to the sun, to feel it’s powerful rays, we step outside of ourselves if even for a moment   and revel in it’s lovely warmth.

That song from the 1940’s by Jimmy Davis, “you are my sunshine, my only sunshine, you make me happy when skies are gray...” comes to mind.  Even on gray days, the sun is present, obscured behind a heavy cloud layer perhaps but, ever present, providing light for food and energy.

You could say that there is a spiritual component to the sun, after all, it does lift our spirits.  We seek the sun when on vacation from our daily routine with the hope of rejuvenating ourselves.  Doesn’t it seem that this spiritual rejuvenation we seek, is needed even more on those gray days?   If only we could capture the sun and bring forth it’s healing properties when we needed it most.  Actually, we can, albeit in a different format altogether.

There exists a Biblical analogy between the sun and the Gospel.  It makes sense, doesn’t it?  The Gospel enlightens us after all, and provides the spiritual food and the energy we need to press on through life’s less sunny moments.  The Word of God lights our path and even when we can’t see or feel God, He is there with us. Without the sun, our world would be plunged in darkness just as when we are living outside of God’s truth, we experience spiritual darkness.

The Gospel, like the sun, has the power to heal and rejuvenate us.  In this Biblical analogy, we find Jesus at the center of the sun, just as we find Him at the center of the Gospel.  On those gray days that invariably arrive just when we could use a little sunshine, seek the warmth offered in the Word of God; it will make all the difference.
