DIY Sewing:
Making A Basic Apron

This is the very first apron I made (for my daughter)...

The main piece of fabric is actually a curtain panel (circa 1940's)...

The scalloped bottom piece was cut from a vintage pillow case - pre-1960...

All of the lace and the center crocheted piece is also vintage that I picked up from an antique shop.

At the top left hand area of the photo you see a trio of crocheted flowers with rhinestone buttons... I purchased those - I can't crochet to save my life - I want to give it another try...I'll keep you posted.

I used McCall's Pattern 3979 View A for this apron.

Here's a few additional photos that provide close up detail on the vintage pieces I picked up from a local antique mall.

This second apron was also from the McCalls 3979 Pattern, View C..and it was also sent to my daughter.

I spent a day trying to create a fabric flower...and finally was successful. I created my own pattern and process...

Here's a link to the Apron Flower Tutorial.  A few photos of the finished product are posted below.

Here's my latest apron. The fabric used is a Japanese import from the Echino line and is available in the U.S.  I picked up this fabric while shopping in the Japanese textile district during my  visit to Tokyo, Japan.

Here's a bit of a distraction from the subject at hand, but if you're interested, you can check out my blog posts from this wonderful visit to Tokyo.

I just love this fabric! Très Française n'est pas? I found this Parisian print at Hart's Fabric online.

There you have it … basic aprons sewn from a basic pattern and embellished with fabric flowers and rhinestone buttons.  I was able to easily create an apron from start to finish inside of a few hours.
